Where did you train for your career? (undergraduate and graduate institutions, certifications or other training): St. Catherine University (BA-Biology), St. Cloud State University (MS-Clinical Research), University at Buffalo Roswell Park Division (PhD-Cancer Sciences)
What qualities or skills are important in your career? Data analysis, technical writing, community outreach, study design, and carrying out study procedures.
What is a typical day like in your job? No one day is the same! I may be coding for 8 hours straight at my computer, I may be presenting my research ideas, there is something different going on everyday.
What types of people do you interact with at your job? PhD researchers, students (high school, undergraduate, graduate), physicians, patients.
What has surprised you about your career? Is it what you imagined it would be? I learned that I actually really like coding and statistics! I always thought it was working with patients that I was destined for, but I really like it all.
What career did you imagine yourself in as a young girl? I thought I would either be a human rights lawyer or a doctor, I guess I am sort of the latter!
What are some of your recent personal goals and/ or accomplishments? I recently developed our Women in STEM group at my institution. I am also preparing to submit my first manuscript!
What do you like to do outside of work? I love camping, coaching my kids soccer teams, and volunteering with an organization in Haiti to help develop a sexual education program for adolescents.
Is there anything else about you and your career that you would like to share? Cancer epidemiology is exciting and you can make a big impact on cancer patients' lives.
