Oceanographers study the ocean and the living things in it. They work to understand how everything in the ocean works together as an ecosystem. Oceanographers can be biologists, engineers, or technicians. They may travel to explore different oceans and conduct experiments. If you are interested in marine animals and love the ocean, you can start your path to becoming an oceanographer by earning a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering. For most research positions, a doctorate in oceanography is needed.
