Doctors work to make people healthier. When people get sick, they figure out why by examining their symptoms and doing tests. Then, they give them medicine or lifestyle advice to help them feel better. There are two general categories of doctors: family and general practitioners who treat common health problems, and specialists who are experts in specific types of health issues. Becoming a doctor takes four years of medical school and three years of working in a hospital following an undergraduate degree.
