Fake Snot

Your Challenge: Use chemistry to make slimy fake snot! Fake Snot

Heat source

Measuring cups

3 teaspoons of gelatin

1/4 cup of corn syrup

Green food coloring (optional)

Here’s How:

  1. Lay out some newspaper to contain any mess.
  2. Have an adult help boil some water.
  3. CAREFULLY pour 1/2 of a cup of boiling water into the bowl.
  4. Add a few drops of green food coloring, if you wish.
  5. Add 3 teaspoons of gelatin into the water and let it soften a little before stirring it with a fork.
  6. Add 1/4 of a cup of corn syrup into the mixture.
  7. Stir the mixture with your fork again and observe the gooey strings that have formed!
  8. As the mixture cools down, add a little water at a time until your “snot” has reached the proper consistency.
  9. Have fun with your fake snot!

How It Works:

Mucus (snot) in your body is primarily composed of sugars and proteins. Of course, the “snot” we’re making in this project is different than the snot in your body, but the essential ingredients of sugar and protein are the same. The protein comes from the gelatin while the sugar comes from the corn syrup.

Fun Facts:

  • Snot is one of your body’s many defense layers against invading germs.
  • The speed of your sneeze can exceed 100 mph!
  • Iguanas are the “sneeziest” animals! They sneeze often to rid their body of some salts that are a byproduct of their digestive system.
